Netflix Thriller Apex Tops Global Charts, Spotlighting Australian Locations

Netflix’s Australian-set and filmed thriller Apex has surged to the top of global rankings, drawing strong worldwide viewership and putting the landscapes of New South Wales and the ACT firmly in the international spotlight.

Led by Charlize Theron alongside Taron Egerton, the film combines high-stakes action with physically demanding performances, including Theron taking on much of the climbing work herself. The film’s momentum has also extended beyond the screen, inspiring a Sydney-based experience tied to its storyline.

Apex climbed to No. 1 on Netflix’s global English film chart with 38.2 million views, ranking first in 82 countries.

The story follows Sasha, a grieving rock climber who travels to Australia’s Blue Mountains, only to find herself caught in a deadly game of survival with a calculating antagonist portrayed by Egerton.

Shot entirely in Australia, the production makes extensive use of striking natural locations. These include the Blue Mountains, where key sequences unfold, Glenbrook Gorge for the climactic finale, The Needles for tense river scenes, and Ginninderra Falls, featured in a dramatic cliff-jump sequence.
