Netflix Champions New Australian Voices Through Screenwriting Initiative

Netflix is helping to nurture the next generation of Australian storytellers, giving emerging screenwriters an opportunity to bring their original ideas directly to the streaming service.
Through its new initiative, The Next Brilliant Career, Netflix brought together eight emerging writers, one from each Australian state and territory, to pitch their original film and television projects to its content team in Sydney.
Developed in partnership with the Australian Writers’ Guild and Australia’s eight state and territory screen agencies, the initiative attracted hundreds of submissions, with finalists selected for their distinctive creative voices and storytelling potential.
Opening Doors for Emerging Australian Talent
For many emerging screenwriters, gaining access to industry decision-makers can be a significant hurdle.
Recognising this, Netflix removed its usual requirement for projects to have an attached producer, allowing writers to present their ideas independently.
Speaking to Variety Australia, Netflix ANZ Content Director Amanda Duthie explained that the initiative was designed to support writers who have begun establishing themselves in the industry but have yet to secure their major breakthrough.
Inspired by Australian author Miles Franklin and Netflix's adaptation of My Brilliant Career, the program aims to discover fresh Australian voices and create opportunities for their stories to be heard.
Beyond the pitch sessions, the initiative also provided opportunities for writers to build industry connections and explore potential future collaborations.
Investing in Australia's Creative Future
The Next Brilliant Career forms part of Netflix's broader commitment to developing Australia's screen industry and supporting the talent behind its productions.
The streaming service has invested more than $10 million in Australian training and on-the-job development programs, working with organisations including the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Lumina and production attachment programs.
These initiatives provide emerging creatives with practical experience, professional connections and pathways into the industry.
Importantly, the benefits extend beyond Netflix's own productions. By supporting local writers and production talent, these programs contribute to a stronger Australian screen workforce across film, television and streaming.
As demand for original stories continues, investment in emerging talent remains essential to sustaining Australia's creative industry.
Through initiatives like The Next Brilliant Career, Netflix is helping develop the creative voices and skills that will shape the future of Australian storytelling.
