Netflix to Bring Australian Drama The Airport Chaplain to Global Audiences
Netflix will bring Australian drama The Airport Chaplain to audiences around the world after securing the international streaming rights for the new SBS original series.
Produced by Sydney-based production company Wooden Horse, the eight-part drama will premiere on 26 August, launching simultaneously on SBS and SBS On Demand in Australia, while Netflix will release the series internationally in territories outside Australia.
Leading the cast is acclaimed Australian actor Hugo Weaving, who stars as Tobias Wallace, an unconventional airport chaplain working in a busy international terminal. He is joined by Australian actress Shabana Azeez, who plays newly appointed terminal manager Mira, whose practical approach frequently clashes with Tobias' compassionate and unorthodox methods.
Set within one of Australia's busiest transport hubs, the series follows the daily lives of travellers, airport staff and families whose paths intersect during moments of crisis, loss and hope. As Mira attempts to modernise terminal operations, she gradually comes to appreciate the unique role Tobias plays in supporting those around him.
The ensemble cast features a strong lineup of Australian and New Zealand talent, including Claudia Karvan, Thomas Weatherall, Jackson Tozer, Elias Anton, Arka Das, Brenna Harding, Michael Logo, Priscilla Doueihy, Claude Jabbour, Kavitha Anandasivam, Erroll Shand, George Mason, Nicholas Denton, Fanny Hanusin, Echo Palo and Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi.
Inspired by a real-life encounter experienced by Wooden Horse co-founder Jude Troy with a Melbourne Airport chaplain, the series explores the often-overlooked human stories unfolding inside one of Australia's busiest public spaces.
Ahead of its television debut, The Airport Chaplain will receive its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival, with development already underway on a second season.
Netflix's acquisition gives the Australian production a global platform, allowing international audiences to discover another locally made series featuring Australian creative talent both in front of and behind the camera.
