Netflix Takes Australian Documentary 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback to Global Audiences

Netflix has acquired global rights to Australian documentary series 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback, bringing the locally produced story to audiences around the world in early 2027.
The four-part series, produced by Blackfella Films for SBS and NITV, examines the death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker and the wider questions around justice, policing and race that followed.
The Netflix acquisition comes as the documentary makes its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it is the only documentary among 10 series selected for this year’s Primetime program.
An Australian Story Reaching International Audiences
Produced in Australia, 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback is a co-commission between SBS and NITV, with Blackfella Films producing in association with PAW Media. The series received major production investment from Screen Australia’s First Nations Department in association with SBS, with support from Screen NSW. All3Media International is also associated with the production.
Blackfella Films producer Darren Dale described the story as uniquely Australian while noting its potential to resonate internationally. Netflix coming on board ahead of its TIFF premiere will now give the documentary an opportunity to connect with viewers well beyond Australia.
Amanda Duthie, Content Director at Netflix ANZ, said Netflix was honoured to bring the documentary to audiences around the world, describing it as a powerful Australian story with the potential to resonate beyond Australia.
The acquisition gives another Australian production an international platform through streaming, extending the reach of a locally commissioned story to Netflix audiences globally.
