Netflix Opens Search for Australia's Next Generation of Screenwriters

Aug 21, 2026

Netflix is launching a new initiative to help discover and develop emerging Australian screenwriting talent, creating another pathway for local creatives to bring original stories to the screen.

The streaming service has unveiled The Next Brilliant Career, a national program launched alongside its upcoming Australian series My Brilliant Career. Developed in partnership with the Australian Writers' Guild and Australia's eight state and territory screen agencies, the initiative will see selected writers pitch original Australian screen projects directly to Netflix executives and receive professional feedback to further develop their ideas.

The program continues Netflix's investment in Australia's screen industry by supporting emerging creative talent and encouraging the development of stories with a distinctly Australian perspective. Participants will retain ownership of their work throughout the program, with the initiative focused on providing mentorship and industry access rather than acquiring rights.

Netflix ANZ Content Director Amanda Duthie said the initiative draws inspiration from the legacy of pioneering Australian author Miles Franklin and aims to help uncover the next generation of Australian storytellers with stories that can connect with audiences both at home and around the world.

Applications for The Next Brilliant Career are now open. Writers interested in the program can find more information on the Netflix website.
